Domestic Telecom services principally represent Verizon's telephone operations that provide local telephone services in 29 states and the District of Columbia. Domestic Wireless products and services include wireless voice and data services and equipment sales across the United States. The Information Services segment encompasses the Company's domestic and international publishing businesses, including print SuperPages and electronic SuperPages.com directories, as well as Website creation and other electronic commerce services. This segment has operations principally in North America and Latin America. The International segment has wireline and wireless communications operations and investments primarily in the Americas, as well as investments in Europe. Overview ![]() Verizon provides its users with many different services. It has an extensive long distance network of regular local phone lines that users can use to call anyone in the U.S. with local coverage in 29 states. Almost 71% of property owned by Verizon Inc. is dedicated to its domestic telecommunications network. They are one of the leading competitors in the cell phone market with a wireless map that spans a majority of the country, with a few blackout areas in the remote sections of the American West. Verizon uses many different cell phones to reach its Wireless signal. They invest about 25% of their money and resources to its wireless network. Verizon also provides subscribers with a DSL high speed internet connection with speeds up to 1.5 Mbps. Verizon has two major sections to its company, the main operating section, called Verizon Communications, provides the local telephone coverage and DSL internet connections while Verizon Wireless focuses more on the cell phone department. Verizon Communications is a very small part of the company and is mot a very big money-making program at this time. Verizon currently invests only about 1% of its resources and structure to information services. Verizon also has an international communications department that allows users here in the U.S. to make calls over-seas. Verizon Wireless Verizon's leading money-making department is its Wireless coverage with cell phones. Its leading competitors are Cingular, AT&T, T-Mobile, Nextel, and in Indiana, Centennial. These wireless companies all have extensive coverage areas with different features on phones such as camera phones, games, text messaging. and voice-activated address books. Coverage areas are different in each state, with some companies providing better signal strength. Here in Muncie, Verizon has better coverage than, AT&T and Centennial, but Cingular is well-known as the best all around the country. Verizon is working to improve their nation-wide services to include more users and expand their business. ![]() Future ![]() Verizon currently has two new products for users. The first is called Verizon iobi Home. This device is used for your PC and it allows you to email voicemail and have the PC answer your phone when you're connected to the internet (for users that do not have 2 telephone lines). It also provides text messaging, call ID, call management, and voice mail. The second new product is called VoiceWing. It is a new form of broadband telephone service that allows you to use your DSL or cable internet connection to make unlimited phone calls with your existing phone number. They are trying to develop a more extensive wireless coverage area to compete with and possibly take business from its leading competitors AT&T and Cingular. Much of Verizon's resources are being devoted to expanding its wireless communications network. Spending on its wireless increased from 24% of company expenditures to over 25% in the past year, and while that does not seem like a huge increase, Verizon spent nearly $6.8 billion this past year, making that increase of 1% almost $68,000,000.
